Plain steel washers are stronger, more wear resistant, and less costly than zinc-plated steel and stainless steel washers. They should not be used in wet or corrosive environments because they easily rust. Black-oxide steel washers have a matte-black finish that prevents corrosion in dry environments. Zinc-plated steel washers have an outer layer of zinc that prevents the steel from rusting in wet areas. Black-oxide 18-8 stainless steel washers resist corrosion just as well as regular 18-8 stainless steel washers and have a matte-black finish. 316 stainless steel washers stand up to salt water, chlorine solutions, and other chemicals without rusting. Bumax 88 stainless steel washers are the most corrosion resistant washers in our offering. They're commonly used in marine environments and chemical-processing plants. Passivated stainless steel washers have added protection against oxidation and corrosion.

Washers for class 10.9 fasteners are stronger than washers for class 8.8 fasteners.
